How to Become Visible in AI Search

To become visible in AI search, your brand needs to be readable, structured and repeatedly confirmed across the web. That means letting AI crawlers access your site, adding structured data so machines understand who you are, and publishing clear, answer-first content that language models can quote directly. Search engines rank pages. Language models cite entities. The foundation for both is the same.

Introduction

AI search changed the rules. People no longer just type keywords into Google, they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini full questions and get a single synthesised answer. If your brand is not part of that answer, you are invisible to a growing share of your market.

The good news is that most of the work is within your control. This guide walks through what actually makes a brand visible in AI search, in the order that matters.

What AI visibility actually means

Classic SEO is about ranking a page in a list of blue links. AI visibility is about being the source a language model draws from when it writes an answer. The model does not show ten options, it gives one response and sometimes names its sources.

To be that source, three things have to be true. The AI has to be able to read your site. It has to understand what your brand is and what it does. And it has to trust that information enough to repeat it. Everything below serves one of those three goals.

Step one, let AI crawlers reach your site

Language models are trained on and retrieve from the open web through named crawlers. The most important are GPTBot and ChatGPT-User from OpenAI, ClaudeBot from Anthropic, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended for Google's AI products.

If your robots.txt blocks these agents, you have opted out of AI visibility before you start. Check your robots.txt first. Allow the AI crawlers you want to be seen by, and keep your sitemap referenced so they can find every page.

This is the single most common reason a brand is absent from AI answers, and the easiest to fix.

Step two, make your brand machine-readable with structured data

A person reads your homepage and understands you are a studio in Munich that builds brands and websites. A machine needs that spelled out. Structured data, written as JSON-LD, states your identity in a format search engines and language models parse directly.

At minimum, describe your organisation, your services and your frequently asked questions as schema. Keep the facts identical everywhere they appear, on your site, in your schema, in your llms.txt file and on external profiles. Consistency is what turns scattered mentions into a single, trusted entity.

Structured data is a deep topic on its own. For the detail, see our guide to schema markup for AI visibility.

Step three, add an llms.txt file

An llms.txt file is a plain text summary of your brand written for language models. It sits at the root of your domain and gives a clean, unambiguous description of who you are, what you do and the facts that matter, without the noise of navigation and layout.

Think of it as the press kit you hand a machine. It will not rank you on its own, but it removes ambiguity and makes it easy for a model to describe you correctly.

Step four, publish answer-first content

This is where most of the work lives, and where most brands stop too early. Language models quote content that answers a question clearly and early. A page that buries its answer under three paragraphs of introduction is hard to cite.

Write the way an answer engine reads. Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences. Use headings that match the questions people actually ask. Define terms cleanly, so a single sentence can be lifted and quoted. Cover a topic in depth rather than spreading thin across many shallow pages.

The brands that win AI visibility are the ones that have become the clearest published explanation of their topic.

Step five, get confirmed by other sources

A language model weighs information more heavily when several independent sources agree. A claim only on your own website is weak. The same claim on your site, on Crunchbase, on LinkedIn, in Wikidata and in industry directories becomes fact.

Build and maintain those external profiles with the same facts you use on your site. Earn genuine mentions from other publications. Corroboration across the web is what moves you from a brand that exists to a brand that answer engines rely on.

How to measure it

You cannot improve what you do not track. Define a set of real questions your customers would ask an AI, then check today whether your brand appears in the answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. That is your baseline. Re-run the same prompts every month and watch the trend as you build.

Where to start

Fix the technical foundation first, because it is fast and it unblocks everything else. Check your crawler access, add or improve your structured data, and publish your llms.txt file. Then build depth, one topic cluster at a time, with content written to be quoted. Confirm your identity across external sources in parallel.

This is exactly the system we build for clients through our AI Visibility service, and the one we run on ourselves.

FAQ

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often and how prominently your brand is surfaced and cited by AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews when people ask questions in your field.

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?

Allow OpenAI's crawlers GPTBot and ChatGPT-User in your robots.txt, add structured data and an llms.txt file so your brand is machine-readable, and publish clear, answer-first content on the topics you want to be known for. ChatGPT draws on the open web, so being readable, understandable and corroborated is what gets you surfaced.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No, but they share a foundation. SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results. AI visibility aims to be the source a language model cites in a single synthesised answer. Both rely on being crawlable, structured and authoritative, but AI visibility puts more weight on clear definitions, answer-first content and corroboration across sources.

How long does it take to become visible in AI search?

Technical fixes like crawler access and structured data can take effect within days to weeks. Building the content depth and external corroboration that make you a trusted, frequently cited source is an ongoing effort measured in months. Start with the technical foundation, then compound content over time.

How do I measure AI visibility?

Define a fixed set of questions your customers would ask an AI, then record whether your brand appears in the answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini today. That is your baseline. Re-run the same prompts monthly and track how often you are surfaced and cited over time.
