GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of shaping your website and content so generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews surface and cite your brand in their answers. Where SEO optimises to rank in a list of links, GEO optimises to be the source a language model quotes.
Introduction
As people shift from searching to asking, a new discipline has appeared alongside SEO. GEO is how you make sure your brand is part of the answer an AI gives, not just a link buried on page two.
It is closely related to AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. The goal is the same, to be the trusted source behind a generated answer.
Why GEO exists
Generative engines do not return ten links. They read across many sources and write one synthesised response. That changes what optimisation means. You are no longer competing for a position in a list, you are competing to be the material the model draws from and names.
Classic ranking signals still matter underneath, because these engines pull from the same open web. But the way content wins is different. Clarity, structure and corroboration beat keyword density and link volume.
What GEO optimises for
Three properties make content more likely to be cited by a generative engine.
Clarity. The content answers a specific question directly and early, in language a model can lift and quote without ambiguity.
Structure. The page uses clean headings, clear definitions and structured data, so a machine can parse what each part means.
Corroboration. The same facts appear consistently across your site and across trusted external sources, so the model treats them as reliable.
GEO in practice
Good GEO looks like a well organised body of answer-first content. Each page targets a real question. Definitions stand on their own. Structured data describes the entity and its facts. External profiles confirm the same information. Crawlers are allowed to read all of it.
None of this is a trick. It is the natural result of being the clearest, most consistent published explanation of your topic. That is why GEO rewards genuine expertise over manipulation.
How GEO relates to SEO and AEO
SEO aims to rank a page. AEO aims to win the direct answer box or featured snippet. GEO aims to be cited inside a generated response. They overlap heavily and share a technical foundation. In practice you build them together, not as separate projects.
