To get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, make your site crawlable by their bots, structure your content so it is machine-readable, write passages that answer a question in one or two clean sentences, and get the same facts confirmed on trusted external sources. AI assistants quote content that is easy to extract and corroborated elsewhere.
Introduction
Being mentioned by an AI assistant is the new word of mouth. When someone asks Perplexity for the best studio to build their brand, the names it returns carry real weight and often a clickable citation.
Getting there is not luck. It follows a repeatable pattern that any brand can build toward.
Step 1, make sure the assistants can read you
Perplexity and ChatGPT retrieve live pages from the web through named crawlers, and Gemini draws on Google's index. If your robots.txt blocks PerplexityBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User or Google-Extended, you cannot be cited. Allow them and keep a current sitemap so every page is discoverable.
Step 2, write passages that are easy to lift
Assistants quote self-contained sentences. A passage that needs three paragraphs of setup to make sense will not be used. State the answer first, then explain. Define each key term in one clean sentence. Keep claims specific and checkable rather than vague and promotional.
Step 3, structure the page for machines
Use descriptive headings that match real questions. Add Article and FAQPage structured data so the assistant understands the role of each section. A clear FAQ block is one of the most frequently cited formats, because each answer is already a short, extractable unit.
Step 4, be consistent everywhere
Assistants trust facts they can verify in more than one place. Keep your core facts, who you are, where you are, what you do, identical on your site, in your llms.txt, and on external profiles like LinkedIn, Crunchbase and Wikidata. Contradictions make a model less likely to repeat any version.
Step 5, earn genuine third-party mentions
The strongest citations often come because a respected third party wrote about you first, and the assistant found that source. Real coverage, guest contributions and listings in credible directories all add corroboration that pure self-publishing cannot.
Step 6, stay fresh and measure
Assistants favour current information. Update your key pages and refresh your dates when content genuinely changes. Then track a fixed set of prompts each month to see where you are being cited and where the gaps are.
